夜に爪を切るのはよくない。
In one town there was a superstition that cutting fingernails at night would bring bad luck. It became a tradition among the people of this town, and children inherited this warning from their grandparents. One boy in town, Tarou, did not care much for this legend.
One night, Taro noticed that his fingernails were getting long, so he took out his nail clippers and started cutting them. Suddenly, the room around him was enveloped in darkness and a low voice could be heard echoing. The voice said, "Prepare yourselves, you who cut off your nails at night. Taro was startled and too frightened to move.
The next day, he noticed something strange. He noticed a series of unusual things happening to him. Spilled milk, a flat tire on his bicycle, forgetting to do his homework, and other small misfortunes followed.
It was hard to believe that these were all coincidences, and he thought of the warning voice from the night before. What if that voice had been caused by him clipping his nails at night? He longed for an end to this monstrosity.
So, he consulted with the oldest man in town, an old man, who told him that he was the only one who could help him. The old man told him that he must apologize to the spirit of the night claw, admit that he had made a mistake, and vow never to make the same mistake again.
Taro apologized to the spirit that night, shivering in the darkness. At that moment, his surroundings shone brightly and a pleasant breeze blew through the air. From then on, no small misfortune happened to Taro, and his strange experience with the spirit of the night claws turned him into a person who taught and respected him.
From then on, Taro told everyone around him about the taboo against clipping nails at night, and passed the lesson on to the next generation. The townspeople were then reminded of the importance of nighttime nail trimming, and they began to respectfully observe the tradition.
